Glossier Invisible Shield Review

It’s finally that time of year! Spring is well underway, and summer is just around the corner. With the weather starting to pick up I am making more of an effort to wear an SPF. But one problem I found was that, whilst my foundation has an SPF of 15, I don’t wear foundation every day. This meant that I needed a better alternative to sun cream because of how shiny it made my face throughout the day. That’s when I discovered Glossier’s Invisible Shield and knew I had to give it a try.

Background

To start I think it’s important to stress how important SPF is as part of your skincare routine. It shouldn’t be an option. If you don’t already use it, it’s time to start. There are two reasons why SPF is important. The first is that it helps to prevent skin cancer. Invisible shield has even been given the skin cancer foundation award. The second is aging. It’s been proven that SPF and Retinol and the only ways of preventing aging, and once the skin has started to age it’s difficult to reverse. So, it’s better to prevent the damage than try to reverse it.

Review

Glossier describes invisible shield as a “sun cream for people who hate wearing sunscreen”. The formula is a clear water gel texture filled with active microcapsules that instantly absorbs into the skin with no greasy residue or white cast. Microcapsules contain substances such as UVA/UVB molecules but inactivate them temporarily until they are absorbed into the skin. Not only does it help to prevent UV damage, but also works to neutralise harmful free radicles and keeps pollutants from absorbing into your skin. Briefly, free radicals are atoms that scan the body for oxygen molecules which it can split to pair with. This causes damage to cells, proteins and DNA.

Directions

Glossier recommends that you use every morning as the last step of your skincare routine, but before you apply makeup. It should be applied all over your face, 15 mins before sun exposure. Glossier also recommends that you reapply at least every 2 hrs for optimal protection. This formula is not waterproof or sweat resistant so bare this in mind.

Ingredients (as listed on Glossier’s website)

“Aqua/Water/Eau, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Homosalate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Dipropylene Glycol, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Methyl Trimethicone, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Caprylyl Methicone, Propanediol, Bis-Ethylhexyl Hydroxydimethoxy Benzylmalonate, Betaine, Acrylates Copolymer, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Hydroxyacetophenone, Phenoxyethanol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer, Dibutyl Lauroyl Glutamide, Dibutyl Ethylhexanoyl Glutamide, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Carbomer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aminomethyl Propanol, Butylene Glycol, Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Extract, Disodium EDTA, Pentylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Silica, Bioflavonoids, Potassium Sorbate, Hydroxyphenyl Propamidobenzoic Acid, Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Ascorbyl Palmitate.”

It should also be noted that the formula is hypoallergenic, dermatologically tested, non- comedogenic, paraben free and appropriate for all skin types. It’s also vegan and cruelty free.

Packaging

The formula comes in a plastic bottle, with a pump. A plastic yellow cap comes the lid which is ideal for travel.

Price

The cost of the invisible shield is £20 per 30ml bottle. I’m not going to lie, it’son the expensive side. As far as I know, you can only purchase from Glossier’s website as an approved retailer. When I purchase mine there was a discount code available, so look out for them to try and save a little (student living)

My verdict

I love this formula so much! Initially I was worried that it wouldn’t sit well under my foundation. But I haven’t had any issues so far. If anything, I feel it complements the current primer I use (only Aveeno moisturiser). It sinks into my skin quickly, but without drying it out or making it greasy so I can wear it without makeup. The smell is so lovely and fresh which is down to the sweet orange peel. A little goes a long way, I use two pumps onto the back of my hand which covers the whole of my face and neck. I also use it by itself as the last step to my skincare routine if I’m having a makeup free day.

One thing that bugs me about this product is the packaging. Glossier is a relatively new brand targeted at a younger audience, so you would think they would try to be environmentally friendly. The bottle is plastic, which could easily be changed to glass. The packaging also comes in a plastic box, but that could easily be changed to cardboard. This really frustrates me as the younger generation is a lot more environmentally aware than previous generations, so you would think they would try to appeal to their audience in this way. As well as trying to help the environment.

As much as I love the product, its £20 for 30ml which isn’t a lot. So, I do think its slightly overpriced. I would also recommend bulk buying from Glossier because of postage and packaging. As I’ve just mentioned, the packaging is plastic, which if they are going to charge £20, they could at least make the packaging glass (sorry but the plastic thing really bugs me). I’ve been on the lookout for a cheaper dupe (my student loan doesn’t cover my expensive taste in makeup) but I’ve not managed to find one yet, so for the moment I’ll be sticking with this one.

Summary

I love this product. It sits nicely below my makeup and helps to protect my skin at 30 SPF. It’s vegan and cruelty free which is a bonus. It’s overpriced which is annoying, but I’ve not found a cheaper alternative, so I’ll be sticking with this because I know it works. So yes, I would recommend and repurchase until I find a cheaper alternative.

Thank you for hanging in there, I hope you found this useful! If you know of any better alternatives please share!

Lots of love,

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% & Zinc 1% Review

It’s safe to say that The Ordinary is taking over skincare. They sell effective yet affordable products by doing away with the extras. By extras I mean extravagant packaging and unnecessary ingredients. This means that what you get is literally what it says on the bottle.

I would say I have combination skin, with my dry patches congregating around my nose, mouth and between my eyebrows (sorry TMI). I also suffer from eczema, so dry patches are inevitable. I was looking for something that would target my breakouts, but not dry my skin out. After watching a couple youtubers recommend The Ordinary’s products, I decided to give Niacinamide 10% & Zinc 1% a go.

Review

According to The Ordinary’s website, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) reduces skin blemishes and congestion in pores. The high concentration of Niacinamide (10%) works alongside Zinc (1%), which consists of Zinc to target sebum production.

Breakdown

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) helps to prevent against environmental damage such as UV rays, pollution and toxins by encouraging skin cell reproduction. It also helps to build a ceramide (lipid) barrier which locks in moisture. This is worth noting if you suffer from eczema or have mature skin. A secondary effect of this is that it helps to minimise pores over time as moisture levels become regulated. It’s also found to reduce acne because of its inflammatory benefits.

Meanwhile, Zinc is well known for its part in maintaining healthy skin. It helps to combat inflammation so is key in fighting breakouts, acne and preventing scarring. Due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties it is often used in nappy rash creams (fun fact).

Despite this, the website warns that:

While Niacinamide and Zinc PCA reduce the look of blemishes and balance visible sebum activity, neither is a treatment for acne. For persistent acne-related conditions, we recommend the use of Benzoyl Peroxide and/or Retinoic Acid.”.

So do a little bit of research before you start experimenting with your face!

Contraindications (taken straight from www.theordinary.com)

“If topical Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid and/or Ethylated L-Ascorbic Acid) is used as part of skincare, it should be applied at alternate times with this formula (ideally Vitamin C in the PM and this formula in the AM). Otherwise, Niacinamide can affect integrity of the Vitamin C.”

Directions

The Ordinary recommends applying both AM and PM before heavier moisturisers. Do not apply to broken skin and make sure to perform a patch test prior to use. It is also not suitable for children (obviously).

Ingredients (taken straight from www.theordinary.com)

“Aqua (Water), Niacinamide, Pentylene Glycol, Zinc PCA, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Tamarindus Indica Seed Gum, Xanthan gum, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.”

The serum is cruelty free, vegan, alcohol free, nut free, silicon free, oil free and gluten free, so the fussiest of us out there shouldn’t have a problem. It has a ph of 5.5 – 6.5 and is not water free. The product is a clear, slightly tacky consistency that absorbs into the skin easily.

Packaging

The product comes in a frosted glass bottle. A pipet is attached to the screw lid to help with application (I always feel very extra when applying this).

Price

The serum is currently priced at £5 (I know, a bargain) for 30ml. You can purchase the serum from most online retailers such as Cult Beauty, BeautyBay and of course The Ordinary’s website. I’ve been using this product for about a year now and I find that I renew it once every 4/5 months.

My verdict:

I’ll be honest, at first, I wasn’t impressed. I couldn’t see much improvement in my skin. I was applying twice a day originally, AM and PM. However, I found that my foundation didn’t sit very well on top so I stopped applying in the AM. After a couple weeks I was convinced It wasn’t doing much. I gave up for a couple of days but I started to breakout. After introducing the serum again in the PM, my skin pretty much cleared. So the serum prevents and clears my skin with continued use. Since then I’ve sworn by it, and I’m currently on my third bottle.

The application instructions advise you apply AM and PM, but I find that it isn’t compatible with my foundation. When I start to blend it makes my foundation go streaky and patchy. Having said that, applying it once a day is fine if I don’t skip a day, but I don’t suffer from acne. I’ve only tried the Body Shop fresh nude foundation over the top as this is my go to, so you may have a different experience with a different foundation.

Summary

I love this serum! This is my most frequently used and repurchased product from The Ordinary and is one of the few products I travel with. If I don’t my skin pays for it after a couple of days. I’ve recommended it to family and friends who both suffer from acne, and so far, they seem impressed by it. It’s vegan, cruelty free and doesn’t contain nasty oils or minerals either so there isn’t much to not like.

Thanks for listening to my rambling, I hope this is useful! Feel free to drop me a message if you have questions or if I have missed anything.

Lots of love,
